1. What do I wear to an adult ballet class?

Comfortable clothes that do not impede movement e.g. t-shirt, leggings, loose-fitting pants, tank top. If you are comfortable in wearing a leotard and tights (traditional dress code), please do so. Ballet slippers, jazz shoes or dance sneakers can be used for shoes. If you don't have any of those...no worries...just dance in your socks for the first class.

2. What do I wear to an adult modern dance class?

Comfortable clothes that do not impede movement e.g. t-shirt, leotard, leggings, loose-fitting pants, tank top. If you are comfortable in wearing a leotard and footless tights (traditional dress code), please do so. NO SHOES NEEDED.

3. What do I wear to an adult tap class?

Comfortable clothes that do not impede movement e.g. t-shirt, leotard, leggings, loose-fitting pants, tank top. Tap shoes and socks. Here is an example of a recommended women’s tap shoe: Capezio women's Fluid Tap Shoe, as well as a recommended tap shoe for men:  Bloch Men's Tap-Flex Dance Shoe

4.  How should I wear my hair?

If you have long hair, put it back in a ponytail or bun. If you have short hair, try a headband or bobby pins. Loose hair in your face is a distraction.

5. Is ballet, modern and tap dance only for females?

NO! NO! EMPHATICALLY NO! All are welcome to enjoy the many benefits of dance.

6.  What level classes should I expect?

The CODA instructors are very experienced and are adept at adapting to every level of

experience within a class. Whether you are a novice starting out or a seasoned dancer, we have what you need.

7. What’s an adult ballet lesson like?

Ballet classes consist of barre work, floor work, and center work. Barre work consists of a steady progression of exercises done while holding onto a wooden support. Floor work is done sitting, and usually consists of mobility, stretching, and strengthening exercises. Center work builds on the exercises from the barre, but challenges balance and stability. The structure of classical ballet lends itself to adaptation and adjustment to accommodate the needs of the adult student while still offering a substantial workout.

8. What’s an adult modern lesson like?

Modern dance classes are codified in structure yet free form in expression. Similar to ballet, there is a natural progression of exercises that helps the dancer develop an awareness of self internally, in space and with others. The dancer is taught a series of strengthening, stretching and agility exercises which will aid them in a wider range of movement. Modern dance is a conduit of conveying the language of the human spirit and soul that can not be articulated otherwise.

9. What’s an adult tap lesson like?

We start out slowly with single sounds and simple rhythms, and are quickly able to progress to multiple sounds and complex rhythms. We find that adult students often surprise themselves with what they are able to do.
